Maya Attoun ‘2018’ – Book presentation & artist talk

August 16. 2018 (7:30 pm)

“2018” is a limited-edition weekly year planner and an artist’s book by the artist Maya Attoun, which celebrates the bicentennial of Frankenstein.

The planner is divided into 12 months, 57 weeks, and includes 80 double spreads, all entirely drawn by pencil. Each month is framed within a different visual and conceptual context and follows the timeline of 2018, with the exception of November that goes back to 1818 – the eve of the creature’s birth. The book project is curated and edited by Tali Ben-Nun.

Inspired by Mary Shelley, the story, and the circumstances in which it was written, the drawings build a reservoir of knowledge and information that ranges from everyday photos that the artist posted on Instagram to climate models, anatomical illustrations, graphs, measuring devices, and various instructions for use.

The artist talk is organized in parallel to the Posthumanism Reading group, which has been hosted by Tuçe Erel since February 2018 at Top. Maya Attoun will present her research about Mary Shelley, Shelley’s book Frankenstein, and Attoun’s book project “2018” at Top Project Space on August 16, 2018. The doors will open at 7:30 pm, presentation starts at 8 pm (sharp!). The book will be available for purchase during the event.
