1985 wird Donna Haraways Ein Manifest für Cyborgs erstmals veröffentlicht. In ihrem Manifest fungiert die Figur des Cyborgs als Metapher um immaterielle Grenzen, die eine westliche Gesellschaft dominieren, zu überschreiten. Wenn Mensch und Maschine sich nahe kommen und eine Verbindung eingehen können, dann müssen auch andere immaterielle Grenzen wie weiblich/ männlich, künstlich/ natürlich oder belebt/ unbelebt aufgelöst werden können.

Mit der gegenwärtigen medientechnischen Entwicklung scheint Haraways Manifest aktueller denn je zu erscheinen. In 2018 sind sich Mensch und Maschine näher denn je. Ist der Cyborg etwa keine Metapher mehr? Sind wir nicht alle bereits Cyborgs und lösen die materiellen und immateriellen Grenzen bereits auf?

1985 “A Cyborg Manifesto: Science, Technology, and Socialist-Feminism in the Late Twentieth Century” by Donna Haraway was published. In the manifesto she uses the cyborg as a metaphor to overcome immaterial borders, which dominates the western society. So if humans and machines are coming closer and are able to make connections, then you need other immaterial borders like female/male, artificial/natural or lively/lifeless to disappear as well.

With the present technical development in the society, the manifest of Haraway seems more actual than ever before. In 2018 humans and machines are closer than ever. Is the cyborg no more a metaphor? Are we all cyborgs already and can make these immaterial borders disappear?

Gesa Heichel studierte Europäische Medienwissenschaft an der Universität Potsdam. Als Medienkünstlerin hat sie bereits verschiedene eigene Projekte verwirklicht: In der kollektiven Ausstellung The Medium is the Message. An Inventory of Effects (2017) präsentierte sie ihre Installation Youtube killed the TV-Star und neuformatierte dabei das Buch The Medium is the Massage von Marshall McLuhan . Im selben Jahr erfolgte die Veröffentlichung ihrer nächsten künstlerischen Arbeit Musikkurzfilm. Dabei benutzte sie experimentell das Format des Musikvideos um den Betrachter*innen immersiv verdrängte Emotionen hervor zu locken. 2018 folgte ihre Ausstellungs-Kino-Performance #reprocucingmotherhood – Zur Reproduktion der Mutterschaft im Kino.

In ihren Forschungsarbeiten beschäftigt sich Gesa Heichel aktuell mit der Durchdringung von Mensch und Maschine.

Gesa Heichel studied European Media Science at the University of Potsdam. As a media-artist she realized these following projects: In the group exhibition The Medium is the Message. An Inventory of Effects (2017) she presented her installation Youtube killed the TV-Star in which she reformatted the book The Medium is the Massage by Marshall McLuhan. In the same year she produced her next work called Musikkurzfilm. In this work, she used the format of a music-video in an experimental way to get out the hidden emotions of the viewers. In 2018 followed her cinema-exhibition-performance #reprocucingmotherhood – Zur Reproduktion der Mutterschaft im Kino.

In her present research, Gesa Heichel focuses on the relationship of humans and machines.
