Distilling the Stack(s) is a follow up workshop on, about and within unMonastery, a project which was shortly introduced bei Kei Kreutler just a couple of days ago earlier in the Schillerpalais.
Friday, 18th December 11:00-18:00
Location: Schillerpromenade 4, 12049 Berlin
Back in 2012, when the unMonastery was conceptually born into the world it felt from the start to be a lonely endeavour, a critical but isolated piece of social infrastructure for what initiators of the project perceived to be an oncoming and total collapse of society.
Though it may represent only a very short period, and only a speck of time in our longer term plans, it’s clear that the ruins of civilisation’s collapse do not stand before us, at least not in the way we had anticipated. Holding this reflection in mind it seems the foundations of retreat, resilience and stable enclaves has morphed into a slightly more complex task in the face of mass displacement and geopolitical nuclear sabre rattling.
This moment is one well situated for reconsidering the terrain and mapping what in a short time has been built upon it; from openAI institutes, to networks of satellite ground stations1 and unanticipated new frontiers1 there is much to refactor3 in considering our role and the relationships we might develop with the things that are unfolding all around us.
With this in mind we intend to plot out existing distributed organisations, nascent infrastructure and new edges, we will look to cross sections of critical work being done across layers of the stack. Hoping to map different slopes of today’s terrain, where different networks, protocols, and contemporary belief patterns crossover, leaving potentially generative gaps. Schedule of Activity, liable to morph (in case the above wasn’t clear):
11:00 -12:00 – Retooling the Maps
Introductory Circle
Open discussion to set out and agree upon the framework we’ll be using in relation to ‘the stack’(s)
Pinning up the maps and prepping the post it-ing.
12:00 – 13:00 – Plotting
Initial scan and plotting of all relevant initiatives, organisations and tools.
13:00 – 14:00 – Lunch
14:00 – 16:00 – Making Connections
Filling in the gaps
Breakout discussion on connectedness and interdependencies: looking at dark matter, duplicate of efforts and consensus centrality.
Identifying what’s missing, how things can be better connected and the chunks that are still missing.
16:00 – ?? – 1-5 Futures
